Muş Alparslan University (MAUN) Disaster Management Application and Research Center Director Dr. Faculty Member İskender Dölek made warnings about disasters that will occur due to snow water. Dölek said that citizens should be careful about floods, inundations and landslides that may occur due to seasonal changes in the city.
Making statements on the subject, Dölek stated that the snowfall that was effective in the city this year was pleasing in terms of agricultural areas and water reserves and said; “2021 was a dry year. Forest fires along with the drought were important events that remained in mind from 2021. Especially after the dry year, the decrease in water levels in dams and lakes made us nervous. Just when we thought winter was over, the snowfall that affected our entire country in March made us very happy in terms of water reserves and agriculture. The fact that the snow that fell before saturated the soil with moisture, and the snowfall that continued intermittently for a week in the following process made some parts of Muş province quite sensitive in terms of natural balances. The fact that the soils in Muş province are rich in clay and that in some places with high slope values, the slopes are saturated with moisture with snowmelt naturally increases the risk of mass movement.”
“WE FOLLOW THE VARTO-MUŞ ROAD ROUTE FROM TIME TO TIME”
Dölek continued his statement by stating that they follow the Varto-Muş road at certain intervals and said; “In Muş province, settlements such as Ağartı, Dumlusu, Sarıdal, Serinova, Korkut were areas under the threat of landslides. With the melting of the snow recently, our citizens living in these settlements need to be even more careful against the danger of landslides. In the project we continue to determine the risk of climate movements in the province, more than 1900 structures in Muş are located in an active or old landslide. Therefore, with the heavy snowfall this year, it is necessary to be more careful about this issue. We can talk about many factors that trigger landslides. Earthquakes, heavy rains, human activities are the factors that trigger landslides. Muş province borders

They mapped more than 1000 large and small landslides and many of these landslides were checked in the field. Apart from settlements, some of the roads in Muş province follow landslide areas and the landslide danger in these areas has been continuing for years. We have been following the new Varto-Muş road route from time to time since it was opened. Apart from this, the Savaşçılar road is also an area we follow and monitor. Our citizens traveling on these road routes after the snow melts should be more careful. Snow melts can cause floods and inundations in places close to the Karasu and Murat Rivers. Our citizens should be more careful in these matters. They should especially stay away from places close to stream beds during these turns. It is very important for our animal breeders not to enter stream beds with their animals during rainy periods for the safety of their lives and property. Negative examples of this have occurred in the past.”
